Before the Doors of Durin, where the Sirannon once ran clear, the waters have gone still and black. Something came up out of the deep places of the world, or was driven there, and it has waited in that dark pool ever since. Many-armed. Pale-fingered. Patient.
When the Fellowship came to the West-gate, it reached for the Ring-bearer. When they fled into Moria, it tore the doors shut behind them and sealed them in the dark. Of all the things that dwell beneath the mountains, Gandalf himself could not name it.
